Why We’re Here

The driving purpose of the college staff is to enable the work of the faculty and students. A&S staff need to be focused clearly on their role; they are employed to help solve problems; facilitate faculty and student work; and add value to the research, teaching and service mission. In order to do this successfully, there must be a shared understanding of the academic enterprise. We want candidates who have thought about these ideas, as they will shape the work we do and how we do it. To be a successful college, we need people who are committed to our mission and culture.  We ask that all candidates for the staff reorganization consider the following questions about who we are:

  • How do you want to make your mark on the College of Arts and Sciences?
  • What is your definition of a liberal arts education?
  • Why do you think a liberal arts education is important?
  • What are your thoughts about faculty governance and faculty culture?
  • How will you contribute to the new staff culture? What does collegiality mean to you?

Who We Are

Think about your criteria for evaluating our organization and culture. It is essential that we share values and expectations of one another. We ask that all candidates for the staff reorganization consider the following questions:


  • Are you capable of the work outlined in your JAQ?
  • Are you willing to learn and acquire new skills?
  • Can you communicate across the organization (with faculty, deans, staff, students, etc), verbally & in written form?


  • Will you complement your team, the college and the university?
  • Do you feel that our organizational values and expectations (outlined above) are in line with your own?
  • Do you work well with others? Are you courteous, kind, thoughtful?
  • Are you flexible? Can you handle change?
  • Can you adapt to and succeed in an academic work environment?
  • Can you accept constructive criticism?


  • Can you admit fault? What does that look like?
  • Are you curious? Are you driven to learn more on your own?
  • Do you have a process that you use to solve problems?
  • Do you have a set of values that guides your decision making?

Raising the bar

  • Will you inspire your team to step up their game?
  • Will you create more value than you capture?
  • Will you bring new ideas into the workplace?

Je ne sais quoi; ‘that thing’

  • What makes you a unique addition to the team (sense of humor, flexibility, positive attitude, etc)?
  • What makes A&S a desirable work environment for you?
